Description
Botanical name | Ficus retusa / microcarpa / benjamina
Common name | Ficus Bonsai
Family | Moraceae | ||||
Position & Light | Keeping the plant in shady position should be avoided. The surrounding temperature should be kept relatively constant. Due to their thick waxy leaves, ficus can tolerate low humidity, but it is advisable to provide higher humidity for management of the plant. To develop aerial roots, ficus need extremely high humidity.
Pruning | To shape the bonsai plant & to retain it, scheduling pruning activity is most important. Pruning of leaf can be used to reduce leaf size. For thickening of trunk, the plant can be grown freely for one or two years. Then pruning of trunk to be carried out to give the bonsai a desired shape. Always apply paste of fungicide on the cut.
Training | Wiring is done to train the branches to give it a desired shape. Ficus branches of smaller to medium diameter are flexible and can be wired with ease. But to be cautious about cutting of bark & infection thereon. For large diameter branches, select a good quality G.I. wire as it will take longer time to be trained.
Ficus plant can also be trained by fusing the branches with one another. With imagination attractive shape can be developed by wiring, fusing, grafting the branches or trunks. |
||||
Potting medium | Use potting medium GrowpoT–B with properties like arable, well drainable & enriched with organic matter.
Re-potting | Re-potting to be done on every alternate year.
Irrigation | Irrigate the ficus generously whenever the soil gets slightly dry. Soft water at room temperature is perfect. To maintain humidity, foliar spray of water is advised with a caution to infestation of fungal disease. During winter due to less humidity, the medium get dried up so more frequent watering will be required.
For tap water, preserve the water 24 hrs to minimise the presence of salts, chlorine, fluoride etc. |
