Plant type | Outdoor herbaceous.
Origin | Native to Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, and Argentina’s Chubut Province.
Cultivation practice as houseplant | Bougainvillea is not a house plant by its natural character. But can be grown as a houseplant in container by experienced gardener. As the plant can be pruned & trained easily with a little experience, thus it is possible to convert in to a mind blowing houseplant with its amazing bracts of blazing colour in bright purples, pinks, oranges, and other hues. As the plant is thorny, place it in a wider space to avoid injury from thorns.
Re-potting | The growth rate of Bougainvillea is high under ideal condition of growing. So pruning, training & re-potting is an essential activity to restrict the growth and condition the plant as houseplant. During growing period the plant requires to re-pot, light trimming of roots once in a year. When fully grown do this once in every two years.
Pruning | Bougainvillea requires pruning at the end of blooming season. The blooms appear on the newly grown branches only, so at the end of the blooming cycle prune 50% of the new growth that produced flower. To understand, if there is a growth of about 4” at the end of the blooming cycle, prune 2” of the stem to initiate flowering.
Potting medium | When grown as potted plant, use well drained, aerated, loamy, organic matter enriched potting medium GrowpoT–H. Sterilised to reduce the risk of fungal infection & root rot. pH value 5.5 – 6.0
Light | Grow well in full sun at least 43000 lx. Keep the plant at balcony, terrace or roof top to receive sunlight.
Irrigation | Irrigate the plant adequately enough, but don’t over water. Over wet soil will leads to root rot and induce fungal infections, dry soil will lead to poor blooming.
For tap water, preserve the water 24 hrs to minimise the presence of salts, chlorine, fluoride etc. |
